Voting Question: I put a deposit down for an apartment, now they’re changing the rent?

I live in New Jersey and am moving to Maine in a month. This last weekend I drove north and put $725 down as a deposit on an apartment while my application was being processed. The employee at this property management company told me $725/mo including heat and hot water was to be the rent.

Now that I’m back in New Jersey I receive a phone call from the employee saying that the rent hadn’t been adjusted yet and that it was going to be $815/mo., but for me they’d make it $795/mo.

I’m going to be a medical student and will be living off of loans for the next few years. Every penny REALLY counts so naturally I’m upset.

What I want to know is can this property management legally tell me one rent price and then change their minds after I’ve put down the deposit? I have not signed a lease yet.
