Resolved Question: Ideas for itinerary for first trip to England?
Me, my wife, and young son will be visiting England the first week of April. We’ll fly into London and will be there the first three days, then I think we’ll take the train to Liverpool, stay a day or two, and then spend our last bit of time in Manchester — our flight back to the States departs from Manchester Airport.
I actually don’t need ideas for our time in London — there’s plenty to do there in three day’s time. What I’m trying to find out is what’s realistic for day trips from the Northwest cities. For example, would Blackpool from Liverpool be a good choice on one day and perhaps an all-day excursion to the Lake District from Manchester? Would the ferry from Liverpool to the Isle of Man be a worthwhile alternative? Also seems like Snowdonia National Forest is a bit too far away from Liverpool for a day trip, right?
Again, our time is limited — only 7 days and 6 nights. Open to all and any ideas, whether it be the touristy kind or off the beaten path. Never been to England but looking forward to it!
EDIT: Okay, I get the feeling Blackpool isn’t essential for the first-time American traveler to England! I’d prefer to avoid the touristy areas if possible, too, but I have an eight-year-old son who’s very active (athletic, too) and he loves amusement park type stuff.
If weather permits I’d like to either do a little hiking or cycling. Seems like that would be viable as a day trip activity in the Peak District from Manchester. Maybe we can trek around and at some point stop in Castleton, Derbyshire, for a meal and a pint? Just an idea. Of course we’d need come up with a Plan B if it’s too wet and muddy that day.
I’d also like to see the ocean and walk along a beach or two without traveling too far from Liverpool city centre. For example, would spending some time in the Wirral for a half day be a good idea? I’d love to visit the coast in Cornwall or the mountains in Wales; however, but my wife is a city person so it’s hard to convince her t
EDIT / TYPOS: I’d love to visit the coast in Cornwall or the mountains in Wales; however, my wife is a city person so it’s hard to convince her to stray too far from the metro areas for extended periods.
If it’s possible I’d to catch a football match (preferrably Premiership or Championship level) … or even take an obligatory pic of us in front of Salford Lads Club — yes, after all these years I still love The Smiths. I realize there’s not time to see everything, though …
