Open Question: Ideas for itinerary for first trip to England?

Me, my wife, and young son will be visiting England the first week of April. We’ll fly into London and will be there the first three days, then I think we’ll take the train to Liverpool, stay a day or two, and then spend our last bit of time in Manchester — our flight back to the States departs from Manchester Airport.
I actually don’t need ideas for our time in London — there’s plenty to do there in three day’s time. What I’m trying to find out is what’s realistic for day trips from the Northwest cities. For example, would Blackpool from Liverpool be a good choice on one day and perhaps an all-day excursion to the Lake District from Manchester? Would the ferry from Liverpool to the Isle of Man be a worthwhile alternative? Also seems like Snowdonia National Forest is a bit too far away from Liverpool for a day trip, right?
Again, our time is limited — only 7 days and 6 nights. Open to all and any ideas, whether it be the touristy kind or off the beaten path. Never been to England but looking forward to it!
