Open Question: How would you spend a week in Puerto Rico?
The wife and I are renting an apartment in OSJ for a week and will also rent a car. If you were in the same situation, how would you spend your week in Puerto Rico? We have six full days to muck about the isle. We do our best to stay away from tourist traps and prefer to go about things slowly, rather than turbo camera clicking tourism.
With regards to OSJ, how many days would you spend exploring the city? For the wife and I, the walk itself is part of the enjoyment. How about the area to the East of OSJ and Miramar?
From what I have gathered in my research so far, Arecibo can get a day (the telescope and caves). Is the trip to Rincon worth it, or is Mayaguez your choice if you had to choose between the two? My wife loves horseback riding. What beach would you recommend for it (I’ve read the Shacks in Isabel is good and so is a company down in Rincon. Maybe there is another?
Whenever I hear about the PR, I always hear about El Yunque. I know we’d like to visit a natural rainforest, but would you suggest another which might be less crowded, more natural?
And when it comes to beaches, I’d love to try and find a generally secluded, non-commercialized beach. White sand and calm clear waters too! What would you recommend? (Aguadilla, Luquillo, somewhere else?)
Any suggestions on where to eat? In San Juan especially, but anywhere within a two hour drive of the SJ. This is a tough question, as my experience tells me that any place mentioned in a travel guide isn’t really that good (I can tell you the best places to eat in NYC and none are listed in travel quides!). We prefer to eat as locals do.
The only thing we are sure of is that given the short time we have in PR, Vieques and Culebra will have to wait. I just don’t think we have the time for it and they look like they are a bit overrun with tourists.
(I realize this is a broad travel question. I have done my homework on Yahoo answerrs and felt that what I am seeking was not really covered in the past Q&A. If it means anything, I have given detailed travel advice on Yahoo answers for both NYC and most of Italy, so maybe I can get a little of the karma back
)
Thank you so much!
